On Friday, November 2nd, Mohammed and his group PR, the Palestinian Rapperz, had their first concert event in Cairo. We were all very excited for Mohammed and went to show our support for him and his music. The Palestinian Rapperz use music as a vessel to inform people about the struggles of the people in Palestine and the hardships they have endured. They also try to promote peace and understanding through their music, and it is very inspiring.
The concert was held at a place in downtown Cairo called the El-Sawy Culture Wheel, which is a very popular place for concerts and art exhibits. Mohammed got us tickets to get in and reserved a place for us right in the front row. The concert was a huge success, and a lot of people showed up, including several local TV. stations. During a break in the concert, a reporter was interviewing Mohammed about what his music stood for and the crowd went crazy with support and started shouting, “ 7-8-9, Viva Palestine!”
Several days later, my students excitedly told me that they had seen me on the Egyptian national news. Apparently while one of the TV stations was filming the concert, the camera man took a liking to me and kept zooming in on me throughout the night. My students thought it was pretty cool that their teacher was at a rap concert and also on the national news.
I was very happy for Mohammed that night because he had a great turn out for his first concert, and the Egyptian news generated a lot of buzz about his music. And because so many people came to his first concert, he now has another concert scheduled for January. I really like Mohammed as a person, and I think he is a great musical artist. I have put some links to the Palestinian Rapperz MySpace profile and to some of the videos from their concert on YouTube on my website. You can find them under the 'links' section on the home page of my site, so please check them out; I think you'll like them!
